Eco-Friendly Guitars - How to Make Your Music "Green"

Dating back to 4,000 years ago, the guitar remains one of the oldest and most widely recognized musical instruments still played today. Wood is the main material used in guitar construction, and in most cases, exotic woods on the brink of extinction are used. But with increasing concerns about deforestation, the time has come to find more sustainable materials for constructing this all important musical instrument.
In order to turn to greener musical instruments, musicians such as acoustic guitar players first need to be convinced that they will still be able to create the sound they want with their instrument. This need for guaranteed sound quality has led many guitarists to remain loyal to particular brands that deliver well in terms of good soundboard construction - never mind the impact of their instruments on the environment.
Some of the common woods used to construct the bodies of electric guitar include ash, maple and poplar, while popular woods such as red cedar, spruce, mahogany, Brazilian rosewood or Indian rosewood are used to make acoustic guitars. The good news is that you may instead opt for guitars constructed out of eco-friendly materials such as recycled plastics, bamboo, SmartWood and flaxwood.
Recycled plastic is highly versatile and great to use in creating some very flashy guitars because of the broad spectrum of color pallets to choose from. You are therefore able to enjoy various guitar finishes if you opt for some funky recycled plastic guitars. For instance, you could get an electric guitar finished with slick looking hemp cellulose to create melodies that also help to protect the planet.
SmartWood is the label attached by the Rainforest Alliance to woods that are regarded as being sustainable and socially responsible. Flaxwood is a new type of wood based material made from broken down wood grains which are then bonded to a binding tone-friendly agent through injection molding. Although innovative, these materials don't compare to the unique properties of wood that bamboo has.
Bamboo is increasingly being used in building trades because it is highly resilient and features rapidly renewing properties. It is also popular because it is sturdy, has almost no potential to warp and is much cheaper than the more limited wooden resources such as exotic woods. Many music instrument manufacturing companies are today making innovative attempts to create sustainably resourced musical instruments. These include First Act that created the Bambusa electric guitar from bamboo with water based topcoat and Yamaha which in 2000 launched an acoustic guitar fully made from bamboo.
